It’s a new school year…. you may be excited or you may not be. However, what I do know is that we usually use these first couple of days to think about all the wonderful things we want to achieve this year. It’s the time where you reflect on what you did last year and build on those goals. This also might be the time you remind yourself that last year you didn’t achieve as many things as you wanted to. It’s okay, that’s me every school year and every New Year’s Resolution time. Don’t be discouraged! Being ambitious is good, even if you’re not achieving every goal. However, don’t stay on this same track of goals and disappointment. Retrace your steps and see where you went wrong. Why didn’t you achieve every goal? When and why did you give up? Use these answers to make a plan for these new sets of goals. Let’s start with some simple steps.

Be Realistic

Yes, it’s amazing to make goals that challenge you. That’s the best way to grow as a person and see who you can really be. However, you need to evaluate what you’re trying to do. Make sure this goal is something you can do within your schedule and that it won’t cause you too much stress. One of my goals is to gain about 10-15 pounds by December; at first, I said about 20-25 pounds but I realized that gaining weight in a healthy way is going to take time. It’s better to be realistic with your goals than to be disappointed in yourself.

Break the Goals Down

Another good way to stay on track with your goals is by breaking big goals down into little ones. Make a schedule, try to keep track of your little goals and take pride in your small accomplishments. Make a timeline, reward yourself, and keep track of your growth. This will keep your motivation running so you can achieve your ultimate goal. By doing this, you’re easing the stress of one large thing hanging over you, and you’re also learning to be organized.

Be Confident

Being confident is the most important thing when it comes to being ambitious. You need to believe in your ability to achieve what you set forth. Don’t be discouraged by little failures; stand back up and get back on track. If your goal is to have a 4.0, believe that you are smart and capable of keeping track of studying. If you want to lose weight, believe that you are strong enough and that no obstacle can stop you.

A new school year isn’t the time to be disappointed in what you didn’t do last year; it’s the time to grow and decide to do better things than you did last year! Trust in yourself and you will achieve things beyond what you ever imagined. Be prepared, have time management, and don’t stress yourself. Enjoy the new semester and be blessed.
